Belgiumhavearitchhistoryandcollecitonofgoldenagecarillons.

TheCarillonisamusicalinstrumentthatisusuallyhousedina
free-standingbelltower,orthebelfryofachurchorother
municipalbuilding.Theinstrumentconsistsofatleast12cast
bronzecup-shapedbells,whichareplayedseriallytoplayamelody,
orsoundedtogethertoplayachord.Acarillonisplayedbystriking
akeyboardcalleda“baton”withthefistsandbypressingthekeys
ofapedalkeyboardwiththefeet.Thekeysmechanicallyactivate
leversandwiresthatconnecttometalclappersthatstrikethebells,
allowingtheperformer,thecarillonneur,tovarytheintensityofthe
noteaccordingtotheforceappliedtothekey.


Thecarillonistheheaviestofallmusicalinstruments;thetotal
weightofbellsalonecanbe100tonsinthelargestinstruments.
Thegreatestconcentrationofcarillonsisstillfoundinthe
Netherlands,Belgium,andNorthernFrance,wheretheyweresymbols
ofcivicprideandstatus
